Truthfully? How big is my brave? Sometimes my brave is quite small. After all, bravery doesnโt feel good. It feels scary. When weโre brave, we are doing something weโre unsure of. Weโre trying something new. Weโre not in control of the outcome. As Bear Grylls says: โBeing brave isnโt the absence of fear. Being brave is having that fear but finding a way through it.โ
So why would we choose to take an action that requires us to move through fear? Shen it would make us uncomfortable? The truth is, we often donโt choose action.
Itโs far easier to choose to stay the same:
To stay in a job you donโt like.
To stay in a loveless relationship.
To stay overweight.
Itโs far easier to make excuses.
How about you? Where are you making excuses in your life? Iโve made many excuses throughout my life. I still do. Excuses can protect us when we arenโt ready to be brave yet. As Arthur Burtโs quote: โNothing happens until the pain of remaining the same outweighs the pain of changeโ. There are times to make excuse. But too often, excuses keep us from the life weโre capable of living.
Have you ever wondered why babies choose to learn to walk? It takes a lot of effort, no? Trying to stand up; to find your balance; to learn how far to put one foot in front of the other. Why do they go to the effort? They keep falling over. Why do they choose to feel discomfort? Why do they want to learn something new? Isnโt it easier to sit and have everything brought to them?
How about us? What makes us decide to get up off the couch to train for a 5K? Why would we choose to go back to school? When we think of changing; career, marriage, weight, location, we feel fear. Fear doesnโt feel good. Unchecked, fear can run wild, like a toddler in our brain. It can convince us we donโt have choices. It can convince us itโs fine keep thinking the same thoughts, taking the same actions, and getting the same results in our lives. For some, that works. They are content to stay, content to live in that half-space.
So why do some of us choose to move into the fear? Why choose change if change is uncomfortable? I think itโs our inner warrior. S/he canโt sit still. Our warrior trusts in us and nudges us forward. Shows us how, if we are brave, we can become a better version of ourselves.
Where are you making excuses? What is your warrior whispering?
