The One-Minute Holiday Reset: Feel Better, Not Behind
The holiday season is here! And with it comes the excitement, the gatherings, and the nonstop busyness that can leave us feeling exhausted before we even get started.
Many of us fall into a familiar pattern this time of year: if we can’t do it all perfectly, we stop trying altogether.
Maybe you skipped your morning walk, had that extra glass of wine, or haven’t opened your journal in weeks.
And then that little voice whispers, “Forget it. I’ll start again in January.”
But what if, this year, you tried something different?
What if instead of the “F it” mindset you chose the “good enough” mindset?
Why “Good Enough” Works
When it comes to holiday self care, perfectionism is the enemy of progress. Our brains get overwhelmed by big goals, but they relax when things feel simple and doable. That’s why small steps work. Small steps are repeatable. They build momentum. And over time, they help you end the year feeling proud instead of behind.
I call this approach The One-Minute Holiday Reset because that’s really all it takes: one minute to check yourself and your mindset. Even less than that actually! Flip from thinking you need to do more to “good enough is good enough”. Let’s see how this plays out in real life (and for more examples from my and my clients lives, listen in to episode 384 of the Love Your Life Show here.)
Move Your Body, Even a Little
Movement is one of the most powerful forms of holiday stress relief we have. It boosts your mood, helps you sleep better, and lowers anxiety. You don’t need a gym membership or a perfect routine. You just need to move. How about you take a brisk walk after dinner? Or do a few stretches while you’re brushing your teeth or waiting for your coffee to brew? Could you dance to a song while you’re waiting for your kid to come down for the drive to school? The key is consistency, not perfection. Every bit counts.
Be “Good Enough” With Wellness
This season isn’t about restriction or rules. It’s about being mindful and kind to yourself. Maybe that means one less glass of wine. One night without dessert. Or choosing water at a party instead of that second cocktail. I have a lot of examples in the Love Your Life Show podcast on how small choices matter. Each one counts and helps you to feel more present and less depleted during the holidays.
Reduce Stress in Small Ways
More good news: you don’t need a twenty-minute meditation or a perfect journaling practice to find calm. Take three deep breaths. Read for six minutes. Or record a quick voice memo instead of writing in your journal.
It’s not about doing more. That leads us to all-or-nothing thinking and being with the thousands on January 17th who give up on themselves. Rather, it’s about beating perfectionist thinking and finding small ways to care for your mental, physical, and emotional health throughout the day.
You’re Not Behind
No matter what you’ve done (or haven’t done) since Thanksgiving, since September, or even since January, today is a good day to start again. You are not behind. You are not broken. You are right on time. Start with one area and make a small step. When it comes to your wellbeing, good enough is more than enough.
