This week on the Love Your Life Show I teach on emotional safety within our relationships. Ideally, we want to feel emotionally safe with our partners, teenagers, parents, and friends. And yet, since another person is involved, we can't always be sure as to whether the relationship will be safe or not. 🤔 Which is why I love @ioana.rotaru.therapy slide reminding us what we do have control over. Our inner emotional safety.

👉🏽When we feel safe within ourselves, we are more able to take the steps that create emotional safety in relationships like:
⚡️ setting boundaries
⚡️ having difficult conversations
⚡️ speaking up and asking for what you want
⚡️ breaking codependent patterns
⚡️ refusing to people please

If you have had childhood trauma (most of us) or were in relationships with narcissists or emotionally immature people, learning to signal safety to your body will be an important piece of your self development journey, getting more emotionally resilient, and spending more time as an emotional adult (versus an activated child 🙋🏻‍♀️ )

Look at the second slide as those are things I do to signal safety to my body.

Mid afternoon slump pick-me-up!

First a general rule, never eat your carbs naked. 🫣 Meaning don’t have those high sugar (even natural sugar) foods without first eating some sort of protein. This id important any age to avoid those sugar spikes and especially so in midlife. 🙌🏾 and so, what to do with a low energy afternoon? 3 steps:
1️⃣ drink some water. Dehydration = fatigue.
2️⃣ eat some protein (here I am eating slivered almonds and some chopped macadamias
3️⃣ eat a carb with natural sugar (fruit or carrots etc). I love frozen organic berries as they taste like a pie to me but don’t weigh my body down with the processed carbs (eg crust or added sugar) that our bodies don’t need to survive. Sometimes I microwave the berries to make it warm and yummy. Others (like today), I keep it cold as I eat it slower and prolong the enjoyment. Oooh, extra credit
4️⃣if it’s fruit, get the added metabolism boost of sprinkling in cinnamon 💪🏽

Emotional safety is a relationship baseline - not

Emotional safety is a relationship baseline - not an ideal.
Yet, like many of us, I didn't realize this until I was out of my emotionally UNsafe relationship. 🤯 It's like we feel like we're being needy or demanding to think that we could have a partner who has enough emotional intelligence to manage themselves so we can be ourselves.
Emotional safety is when we feel safe to share our feelings and needs, without fear of criticism, defensiveness, or judgment.
You trust that disagreements will be repaired, not turned into battles.
You trust the other person to regulate their own emotions instead of blaming you for them.
Sound like a fairy tale?
Let's normalize this.
For us and for our kids and teenagers.
I know for me, I felt like it was crazy to ask for some of these things because the opposite was modeled for me. Codependency, emotional immaturity, dysregulation, and narcissistic behaviors were much more common than emotionally mature ones.

As someone who's been in narcissistic, emotionally

As someone who's been in narcissistic, emotionally unsafe relationships, hearing some of these things on this slide feels better than any hug. 🤗

How about you? Has someone told you you're too emotional? Or you shouldn't be feeling what you're feeling? ❌

Most of us have had some experiences of feeling emotionally unsafe. As kids with emotionally immature parents or in codependent relationships, it's easier for people to try to get us to change how we're feeling than for them to regulate themselves.
🧐
I remember when I first started dating after my divorce, I had a man say "you're too upset about that. You shouldn't be that emotional." Bascially telling me I couldn't have the experience I was having.
Luckily I had learned about codependency, emotional maturity and what's my responsibility and what's his. 🙌🏾
So I said: "I may be too emotional for your nervous system but I'm not too emotional. I want a relationship where it's safe to share the experience I'm having. I want a partner is adult enough to process his feelings about me having feelings" (versus codependent, I need to change so he can feel better).
If you're interested in learning more about emotional safety, type yes. Learning about this has helped me so much!
(and, before we go into shame of "Oh no, I may not provide emotional safety for my teens or kids", remember that this emotional intelligence is a sliding scale (versus you have it or you don't). Adopt a growth mindset of "How can I create more emotional safety in my relationships?".
